Children and teens tend to use behaviors to show us their thoughts and feelings, as they lack the communication skills an adult has. We can teach families how to understand and help your young clients with these behaviors as well as help the clients learn and communicate these feelings to us in a safe more productive way.
It is the job of the counselor to ensure a safe, caring, and accepting environment when working with children and adolescents. This ensures their ability to open up and share thoughts, feelings, and problems they may be having. Children and teens show their thoughts and feelings in very different ways than adults. Special training is required to understand the differences and also to have the ability to help these young clients heal.
Using play therapy and other expressive techniques with this population has shown to be an effective way to allow the client to expressive their needs and wants, while getting to the root of the problem. Using these techniques we can also show the clients a better way to communicate these things to their caregivers.
